What the Jim Banks site says about the ’73:
‘This classic 70’s style single fin has been finely tuned, giving it a performance level that will way outperform original 70’s style single fins, while still staying true to the beautiful simplicity and purity that is the essence of the single fin.
CONCEPT – The ’73 is a single fin styled on an original 70’s design and tweaked for a wide variety of surf.
OUTLINE – The outline features a fuller template and a winged pintail to produce exceptional planing in smaller, softer waves, ease of turning, and improved control in larger and more powerful waves.
BOTTOM – The single into double concave gives the ’73 a squirt and acceleration thru turns that is rare for a single fin. The concave also provides improved holding thru more critical turns and on steeper faces that allows a more dynamic approach to the wave if that’s what you’re chasing.
RAILS – The low soft rails reduce drag, to provide a smooth glide feeling in all types of waves and provide added penetration and control on larger and steeper faces.
ROCKER – A classic single fin style, low rocker produces surprising paddle power, and a smooth glide in both softer and more powerful waves.
VOLUME – The carefully balanced volume is designed to produce ample paddle power, excellent planing in softer waves and still offer dependable control in larger waves.
FINS – The 73 is standard with a 10″ adjustable single finbox. Side boxes can be added as an option.
SUMMARY – This surprisingly versatile single fin, is a board that surfs exceptionally well in smaller and softer style waves, and yet will style produce smooth solid carves on larger, more powerful waves.’
What people are saying about it:
“Inspired by the pintails of the 70’s, the ’73 is a full-charged glide machine, allowing you to swoop and carve like the machete ninja you’ve always wanted to be. Jim Banks says it is the best single fin he has ever surfed, and with the 4+1 fin set up, why not try it out as a quad as well?” – Down The Line Surf Shop
“Inspired by the winged pintails that he blitzed onto the scene with in the early 70s, the Jim Banks’ ’73 has its fuel tank loaded with nitro. All you have to do is put your foot to the floor! Swoop, pick your moment, and slice this bad boy into the waves like a hot knife through butter. With a subtle single to double concave, flat rocker and pronounced hip, this board is all about speed, control and, most importantly, a ton of fun.” – Carve Surfing Magazine
