A wave pool is coming to Sydney, as the New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment approved a $24 million dollar proposal to construct a wave pool 25 kilometers from the Sydney Olympic Park.
The group behind the proposal is Sydney-based developer URBNSURF and similar to other wave pools around the world, they will make use of Wavegarden’s Cove technology. Construction is expected to start in the second half of the year and finish in 12 months.
All 3.2 hectares of the site will be used for a lagoon that can accommodate 80 surfers per hour, an indoor bar and restaurant, café, retail shop, changing rooms, first-aid quarters, and lifeguard rooms. There’s even a two-story surf academy for training.
With Sydney being close to many decent surfing beaches, it seemed like an odd choice for a wave pool site. However, these beaches are getting crowded by the day and URBNSURF believes their project will offer surfing aficionados an alternative to less accessible surf.
On their website, the company explains, “Sydney is blessed with a large number of surfing beaches, but access to those beaches and crowding in the line-up is becoming an increasing issue. URBNSURF Sydney will provide an authentic alternative to ocean-based surfing for Sydney residents and visitors to #surfmore safely, easily and often.”
