July 13, 2018 was a day worth waiting for. We now have our number one women champion. Stephanie Gilmore may have had a slow start but she finished taking the Jeep Leader jersey after more than six hours of competing.
Gilmore was excited to surf at J-Bay. She said it was love at first sight. The waves were great that day and the slow swell allowed the surfers to show what they’ve got. Gilmore’s performance didn’t dominate her competitors in the beginning. She says, “I think I was just stressing too much about everything. Everyone was telling me that this is my wave, this is my place. And then I saw Lakey smash it and get huge scores … so I started thinking that maybe this isn’t my wave.”
In Round Three, Gilmore, Van Dijk and Erickson battle it out, and Gilmore advanced with a score of 14.50
Gilmore and Macaulay competed in the Quarter Finals where they both scored 15.00. Gilmore came out victorious after scoring a higher wave of 8.00.
In the Semi Finals, Gilmore battled it out with the highest scorer (so far) Tatiana Weston-Webb and got the score 8.17 followed by a 7.50, which led her to the Finals, where she and Lakey Peterson compete for the Jeep Leader jersey.
She defeated Peterson with a final score of 14.24 against 11.50. “It’s been really fun to battle back and forth with Steph.” She’s won most of the Final match-ups we’ve been in. I’ve gotta start winning some of these soon,” said Lakey Peterson. “It’s nice to be a part of a rivalry again. Rivals are what make this sport exciting and beautiful. I get inspired by great rivals,” replies Gilmore.
Stephanie Gilmore now leads the tour with 45,575 points.
