The heavy surf at Box by Box break along the east coast of Barbados took the life of a promising young surfer. The victim, identified as Zander Venezia, died after his head hit the reef causing his neck to break. Nathan Florence, who was on the scene to also surf the sizable swell created by Hurricane Irma, was one of the first to reach Venezia. Florence began CPR and helped bring Venezia to the beach where the ambulance took him to the hospital thereafter.
Surf Instructor Alan Burke told Surfline, “I’m told that Zander got overturned by a closeout set, where he likely hit bottom. Nathan Florence got to him first then shouted for the other guys and started to perform CPR,” Burke continued. “Zander was bleeding, and he wasn’t moving. They tried to get him to the beach quickly, which was difficult. ‘Box by Box’ is a tough place to get in and out of, even if you have the ability.”
At the hospital, it was found out that Venezia’s neck had been broken. The young surfer did not make it and surfing just lost a highly talented grom. Venezia recently won the Rip Curl Grom Search in August and the NSSA regional championships in April.
