A 12-foot tiger shark attacked a 25-year-old paddleboarder while he was stand-up paddling in Kukio Beach.
According to reports, the victim was alongside his father when the shark hit their board, knocking them both off. Once in the water, the animal attacked him but not his father.
The incident happened around 9:30 AM just outside of the Kukio lifeguard stand when the lifeguards heard a cry for help. “They took a four-man canoe out to find a male individual who had been bumped off his paddleboard about 100-150 yards offshore,” Fire Capt. Michael Grace reported.
Bystanders and the Kukio staff quickly applied tourniquets before the victim was air-lifted to North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was then transferred to Queens Medical Center on Oahu after the surgery.
Authorities said that the victim lost part of his leg and suffered arm injuries. His father was unharmed.
The beach was closed following the incident but was reopened last Sunday after an aerial check.
