U.S. President Barack Obama, loves surfing, or is at least interested in it. When the White House has released the soon to be Ex-President’s summer reading list for his summer vacation, the top of his list is a book about surfing. The book titledBarbarian Days (A Surfing Life) by William Finnegan, A New York Times Bestseller and Pulitzer Prize winner is Obama’s #1 book to read this summer. The book has quickly become revered as the best book ever written about surfing.
#2 “The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead. A novel about a runaway slave, it is the latest pick for Oprah Winfrey’s book club and was excerpted in a pullout section in Sunday’s New York Times.
#3 “H is for Hawk” by Helen Macdonald, a memoir about how raising a hawk helped the author deal with her father’s death.
#4 “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins, best-selling thriller, the movie of which is to be released in October.
#5 “Seveneves” by Neal Stephenson, an apocalyptic novel about Earth in the wake of the moon’s shattering, by the author of “Snow Crash” and “Anathem.”
It has been an annual Whitehouse tradition to release Obama’s reading list for the First Family’s vacations in Martha’s Vineyard.
By putting the surfing book on his number one to read list, Obama shows keen interest in surfing, which isn’t surprising. The first black president grew up in Honolulu where surfing culture is vibrant and world class waves are abundant.
