Could a rivalry be brewing between Jesse Mendes and Mikey Wright? A video of a shoving match between the two had surfaced on Instagram and has been causing a buzz around the surfing community.
During a free surf before the Margaret River Pro started, Wright is said to have dropped in and claimed Mendes’s waves. An angry Mendes then confronted Wright after, shoving the latter multiple times. Wright did not retaliate but had a few things to say to the Brazilian.
For some context here’s what the uploader captioned the video (that was later taken down), “Interesting free surf session this morning before the event started. Word on the street is @jesse_mendes had waited all morning for the wave he dropped in on @mikeywright1 and Mikey had just had a set wave! No love lost by the looks!”
If this were the case, then Mendes confronting Wright made sense. However, some are saying that it was technically the Brazilian who dropped in and the Aussie just expertly maneuvered around Mendes.
The King who opted to skip on Margies Pro weighed in on the situation, “@kimfeast_ looks like you and I when we met out there! Keyboard warrior opinion here… I’ve surfed with them both a lot. @mikeywright1 is possibly the biggest frother I’ve ever seen and forgets other people exist when it starts barreling. He knew what he was doing here outpositioning @jesse_mendes in a tricky and crowded lineup. Or maybe he was getting Jesse back for paddling me around the point in our heat at sunset years ago, haha. Whichever it is, I’m sure we’ll all look forward to their next heat together.”
Mendes and Wright facing off would have to wait as WSL officials have officially canceled the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro after two shark incidents were reported near the event location. And we won’t probably see anymore shoving between the two anyway, as the surfers seemed to have buried the hatchet and hugged it out like grown men should. All’s well that ends well.
