Billabong Pro Tahiti, August 22, 2016: Matt Wilkinson had a big loss in Round 3 at Teahupo’o, losing for the second time against event wildcard Bruno Santos. Santos, who was a former event winner at Teahupo’o, was a fierce competition and eliminated the current world number 1 with his 12.33 score. Wilkinson waited patiently for the sets he was looking for. But the sets never came and he ended up with a meager 6.83, which was a far cry from defeating Santos’ score. This defeat puts Wilkinson’s yellow jersey at stake with John John Florence and Gabriel Medina inching in closely.

Despite posting a score of 13.33, Florence managed to win over Alex Ribeiro’s 8.57.
Medina on the other hand also grabbed his round 3 win scoring a 15.66 over Kai Otton’s 7.83.

Josh Kerr, Julian Wilson, and Joel Parkinson had great performances in round 4. But Wilson had the excellent 17.97 in round 4, one of the best in that round. He defeated Parkinson and Medina to earn a ticket to the Quarterfinals.

The Round Four match between Kelly Slater, Bruno Santos, and Adrian Buchan has become considered as the heat of the day. Three former winners at Teahupo’o all matched up in a single heat. Bruno took the lead with a 9.00 deep barrel ride. Slater responded with his stylish 8.17. Bruno once more posted a 9.30. Ace only managed a mid-range 6.00 score.

Kelly Slater took off on a smaller insider, he pulled in deep and disappeared in the barrel twice. He was buried behind the foam ball but somehow, he was able to navigate his way out and he earned a perfect 10.00.

Just as it was considered a done deal, Bruno was not finished yet. Slater got the lead with his 18.17 points but Bruno fired back with another 8.83. And it was enough for him to steal the win from Kelly. An impressive win that gave him another trip to the Quarterfinals.

Florence, watching from the sidelines is in a very good position. If he could beat Josh Kerr and Jason Andre in their upcoming heat, he will be able to nab the yellow jersey. By finishing last, John John was matched with Joel Parkinson in round 5. Parko now serves as the last line of defense for Wilkinson’s yellow jersey.

The event is far from over, and the intensity continues to rise as the it proceeds to the next rounds.
