Despite the kinks, the inaugural event at the Surf Ranch was a success and to top it off, Kelly Slater had one of his best performances this season. Though it would have been nice to win at his home turf after skipping on a couple of events, a third-place finish isn’t too shabby. And since his performance was pretty impressive, Slater is going back on tour right? Not exactly.
In a post-run interview, the King said that he’s not going to Europe, which means fans won’t be seeing him compete in the Quiksilver Pro France. “I’m not planning on going to Europe. At this point, we’ll see how it goes.”
People were quick to react to this news and were not shy to express their opinions. In Slater’s Instagram post, a follower commented that the 11-time World Champion is only “surfing events that are convenient” to him and “using his injury as an excuse to skip on ones he doesn’t want.” Another one said that Slater “can’t be bothered to surf Europe” and “is taking Caio Ibelli’s spot.”
To which surfing’s GOAT replied with, “Surfing Euro leg would potentially hurt myself again before being really healed and not requalify me for next year. Also, at what point do people think athletes have to jump back in, the day they appear healed or when they’ve had time to test their bodies and equipment and get their level back to where they believe it should be?”
So it seems Slater isn’t healed up completely yet. He would definitely be missed in France, but maybe we’ll see him at Pipeline? We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
