This CT season has not been an auspicious one for Kelly Slater, whose foot injury from last year continues to interfere with his ability to surf professionally. The GOAT has given notice once more that he will not be competing in a CT event, this time withdrawing from the Tahiti Pro Teahupoo.
It is the sixth time this season that Slater’s foot has kept him from participating in a comp. The injury has not fully healed despite several surgeries, and the veteran surfer has decided not to tempt fate by competing.
Slater is currently number 36 on the Jeep Leaderboard and could have used a win in the Tahiti Pro, where he has come out on top five times total in his career.
Stepping in for the 11-time World Champ will be the current world’s number 9, Mikey Wright. Wright hasn’t missed a CT event this year except Bells. If he does well at Teahupoo, a place in the 2019 CT will be looking more probable for the daring Aussie, who is set to surf against Adriano de Souza and Matt Wilkinson in the first round.
