Kelly Slater Out, Miguel Pupo and Mikey Wright to Surf Margaret River Pro

It seems we won’t be seeing Kelly Slater for the third time this year, as the King officially announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Margaret Pro.

Kelly Slater was a no-show at Snapper Rocks because of his broken foot, and he opted out of the recently concluded Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach for the very same reason. If you can recall, Slater injured his foot while free surfing at JBay last year and has since undergone several surgeries to fix it.

Bede Durbidge was originally set to replace Slater but according to WSL, Durbidge declined the offer so Miguel Pupo gets the spot. Brazil’s Pupo currently ranks fifth in the QS and will face off current World Champion John John Florence and Caio Ibelli in Round 1 of the Margies Pro.

Fans can also expect an interesting competition as Owen’s brother Mikey Wright was awarded a wildcard spot in the third leg of the 2018 CT. The younger Wright caused a buzz in Snappers last month when he eliminated two world champions – Florence in Round 2 and Gabriel Medina in Round 3. And if Mikey continues this display of skills, we might just notice the 11-time World Champion’s absence.
