Charlie Fry encountered a shark while surfing, and came away with punctures in his right shoulder and bicep to prove it. It could have been much worse, and the Brit doctor thanks pro surfer Mick Fanning for his fortunate escape.
As Fry told it to Nine Network, he was surfing with three friends at Avoca Beach, New South Wales, when he felt a “massive thud” on his right and felt like there was a hand grabbing and shaking him. Thinking it was one of his mates fooling around, he turned, to see a shark’s head breach the water.
Recalling the video of Fanning’s run-in with a shark, Fry punched the animal in the face, climbed onto his board, and rode the next wave in. Driven then by adrenaline, his one thought was to surf in as fast as possible, then paddle for his life.
Fry’s interview with Nine Network included a shoutout to Mick Fanning: “If you are watching or listening, Mick, I owe you a beer, thank you very much.”
