An Australian mine worker was bitten on the arm by a shark while bodysurfing at Samurai Beach.
According to report, 51-year-old Paul Kenny was trying to catch the last wave back in when he accidentally headbutted a shark. The animal then retaliated and bit his right bicep.
“I didn’t know it was there and couldn’t see it because it was churned up white water,” Kenny said. “I started hitting it and punching it to get it off.”
Kenny who is also a seasoned surfer and a volunteer at the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club had to swim 150 feet to reach the beach. Once there, people who witnessed the attack immediately applied first aid before rushing him to the hospital where he received 20 stitches.
He suspects that it was a bronze whaler that attacked him and harbors no ill-feeling towards the shark.
“I was in his world. He was just going about his business and I headbutted him so he retaliated.”
