6-Time World Champ Is Back : Stephanie Gilmore Wins Roxy Pro Gold Coast 2017

In an epic day of comebacks, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) secures her sixth career victory at Snapper Rocks and her 25th career Championship Tour win after a long drought. Her last CT event win was back in 2014, but Gilmore dominated the Roxy Pro and got the Jeep yellow jersey back.

In the final heat against Lakey Peterson (USA), Gilmore finished with a 16.60 combined heat total with a 3.94 margin over Peterson’s 12.66. Peterson had the lead in the opening minutes of the final heat scoring a 5.83 and a 6.83. Gilmore answered with a 7.93 of her own. And with less than 20 minutes left in the heat, she backed up her score with a 5.00 ride and took the lead, leaving Peterson chasing a 6.11.

Lakey took off on the next wave and only scored a 3.07 after going down on a section. Steph took the opportunity after that and managed excellent turns enough to earn an 8.67 further extending her lead.

With less than 10 minutes left, Peterson hustled to regain the lead but she was unable to find a good wave as time ran out giving way to Steph Gilmore’s victory. She is once again World No. 1.

During the post heat interview, she was asked about how she felt being number one again. “Oh My Gosh! I can’t believe it!” exclaimed Stephanie, “I visualized this event so much, all the way to holding the trophy. It feels so good, I can’t believe it.”

When asked to comment about going to Margaret River wearing the yellow jersey, Steph said “Yeah the color yellow, I haven’t had it for a while. And it’s going to feel so good. I can’t wait to put that on.”

“Snapper is just one event. It’s so far from now. But like they say, the stats are pretty good when you win here first, and you go on to do pretty well in the world title race,” Steph continued. “We’ll see what happens, but I’d love to win another title.”

Steph then thanked her Gold Coast fans for their support saying, “I’d like to thank everyone for tuning in. It feels so good. I’m so happy.”

Steph Gilmore started the year at World No. 1 and is heading to Margaret River with an aim of keeping her world title race on track. Will she bag her 7th World Title?
