If you’re a surfer, chances are you’ve screwed up the placement of the traction pad on your board more than you’d like. There you are, reeling and excited to ride your brand new stick only to realize that the traction pad is skewed. And even if it’s only a tad bit off, you’ll definitely notice. Fortunately, Kelly Slater has a few tricks up his sleeves.
If there’s anyone out there who knows how to perfectly line up his traction pad, it’s the King. 11 World Titles, a world record for being both the youngest and the oldest to be crowned, and a Surf Ranch to boot are enough to prove that he knows what he’s doing. In this short clip, Kelly demonstrated his surprisingly simple technique.
He starts off by opening the package but keeping the plastic backing so he can line it up on his Slater Designs Gamma board easily. He then positions it on the board, peels off the backing of the center pad first, and sticks it to where he wanted it on the board. From there, he can simply line up the outside pads a few centimeters from the center ensuring that they’re not too spread out. Brilliant!
How do you place the traction pad on your board? Do you do it like Kelly?
