The reason why surfing is appealing to many is that it allows you to fully detach from the busy life on land and be in the water for a while. It is a time for one’s self to think their thoughts through and clear their minds – a way to relax. But let’s face it, many people can’t be away from their mobile phones for a long period of time. In this day and age, work, socialization, even health and fitness rely on the different apps used on our mobile phones.
Although surfing is fun, sometimes a surfer who has to work for a living and to sustain his passion, will need to go back to the shore in between sessions to check his mobile phone for important phone calls and notifications, especially those that are work-related.
But technology has come a long way and just recently, Apple revealed its Apple Watch Series 3. Their website summarizes what the new watch can do along these lines:
“Answer a call from your surfboard. Ask Siri to send a message. Stream your favorite songs on your run. And do it all while leaving your phone behind. Introducing Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular. Now you have the freedom to go with just your watch.”
So it has cellular capability allowing users to answer phone calls, send messages, chat and much more while in the water. The Apple Watch Series 3 is waterproof, in case you haven’t figured it out yet. This can be a useful feature, especially for surfers staying in the lineup, waiting in the water in between sets. Now surfers don’t need to leave their phones in their dry bags along the beach only to find out it has been stolen when they get out of the water. Because it has its own cellular connection, the phone can be kept in a safe place and you can still stay connected on the Apple Watch.
Answering calls and sending messages while surfing may seem counter-intuitive because it distracts you from really getting into the flow, but it has its advantages too, especially when you need to call for help. When things go wrong in the water, you can call for help, assuming you are not drowning or being attacked by a shark (we doubt that you can make a call using an Apple Watch in such a situation).
But it can be a lifesaver, especially when you get pulled by the current too far from the shore and have difficulty paddling back, like one surfer who went missing off the Scottish shores. When a surfing buddy is in trouble, you can also use the watch to call for rescue or help. There are many possible uses for this device.
But if the only reason you are getting one is that you want to stay updated on social media and you want to reply immediately to not-so-important messages, then perhaps you are missing the whole point. You are surfing to be one with the water, to enjoy your time with nature, to improve your surfing skills, to get barreled, and to get stoked. And we don’t think having a waterproof watch phone will give you all that. So right before you line up for this latest gadget, make sure you are getting it for the right reasons. If not, your money might go a long way when you invest it in equipment that will help improve your surfing.
