Maurice Cole Mermaid Review

What the Maurice Cole site has to say about the Mermaid:

‘The Mermaid is Maurice’s mainstay performance design for small waves. A board designed to replace anything fishy. In tandem with an ATM a surfer can ride tiny waves on the Mermaid and jump back onto the ATM when the waves get bigger. As with the transition between Metro and Protow, between Mermaid and ATM there are significant design differences but enough similarities to make the switch non traumatic and the transition last a couple of waves not days. This design has won surfers many world tour events in places like Hossegor, Brazil, and Aussie beach break locations. The Mermaid is approximately 1 to 2 inches shorter than and 1/4 to 1/2 an inch wider than your standard short board. The wider tail helps carry you over the flatter sections of the wave and the extra curve in the Mermaid tail keeps it loose and snappy.’

What people are saying about it:

“Tried one of the ‘Mermaid’ models about 18 months ago – unusual squared-off swallow tail, with very edged rails and plenty of concave. (seen some of these on sale around the traps) Built for speed. Went well with speed, but, yes, those rails will feel catchy in slop. But it was a ‘clean’ feeling board if that makes sense – lots of release and carved well on the face.” – user AlbyAl on RealSurf Surfers’ Forum

“Had one. Liked it more in point surf. Bought it at bells, and loved it at waves around there. Then took it home to where its90% beach break. Unless it was lined up I wasn’t really feeling it.” – user manbearpig on Surfer forum
