HaydenShapes Psychedelic Germ Review

What the HaydenShapes site says about the Psychedelic Germ:

‘The Psychedelic Germ is a highly responsive, shorter, wider surfboard with added features that make it ideal for innovative surfing.

The design concept of The Shred Sled model was used as the starting premise in the creation of the Psychedelic Germ. One of the key notable changes was the addition of displacement hull designed by both Hayden Cox and well-known Australian Naval Architect, Andy Dovell. The second key feature being the snowboard inspired side cuts.

Similar to that of a boat design, the hull softens the water flow through the entry of the board. It hits the ridge of the hull, and is dispersed into the single concave. When taking off late, this assists in planning through choppy water or helping to land critical maneuvers.

The side cuts shorten the radius of turns, meaning the board will draw a much tighter arc. During bottom turns, it engages the 3 dimensional curve that the side cut creates, which draws the surfer up the wave face. This then transitions onto the inside rail which pulls the surfer around and back into the pocket with ease.

For a shorter and wider board that’s strikes the balance between performance and innovation, the Psychedelic Germ has all the features needed to bring a whole new dimension to surfing.’

What people are saying about it:

I got addicted to the Germ for a while. They’re pretty hard to get off. I kinda tripped out on the weird aesthetic. The side cuts, how it warps out a little bit with that beaky nose. Every feature compliments each other in a way.” – Craig Anderson on haydenshapes.com

The most surprising ride in the Haydenshapes range, this is a different surfboard design with a cult following. The Haydenshapes Psychedelic Germ’s unique design aspects – notably the exaggerated displacement hull under the nose and side cuts through the back half of the board – produce a ride that is unlike any other board.” – Compare Surfboards

I can’t explain why all the oddities attached this board work together, but somehow they do. On the first wave I caught, the board shot out off the take off and contrary to what I thought it would ride like, it was an effortless transition from my standard shortboard to the Psychedelic Germ. Long bottom turns bypassing crumbly sections were made simple and tight arcs in the pocket felt pretty easy.” – GrindTV

It’s ugly and weird with strange bumps, but the Germ is unstoppable in the smaller stuff. Go fast.” – redbull.com

The Haydenshapes Psychedelic Germ has been refined with Warren Smith to be extremely responsive, shorter and wider making it perfect for innovative surfing. It is based on the popular Shred Sled with some major changes including the concave and side cuts helping with late take offs, choppy waters and landing critical maneuvers.” – Boardcave
