Firewire Double Agent Review

What the Firewire site says about the Double Agent:

‘Designer Dan Mann describes the DOUBLE AGENT: “This design features a double barrel concave running from nose to tail. We introduced the same ‘double barrel through the fins’ on the Sweet Potato, Baked Potato, and the Potatonator, and trusting that there can’t be too much of a good thing, I went ahead and extended that feature all the way forward. This adds to the board’s sensitivity under front foot loading.

The other unique feature is a dramatic reduction in the foil/thickness starting around the mid-point of the board and continuing out the tail. I was inspired by skimboarders and how they pull off huge slashing carves and airs on incredibly thin boards with curvy outlines, so I wanted to incorporate some of those characteristics into a surfboard. As a result, the noticeably thin tail on the DOUBLE AGENT allows for very sensitive rail to rail turns and an extra pop of flex when you unload at the completion of a turn. The thicker foil up front preserves elevated paddle power and keeps the float under your chest.”

Ideal for knee to shoulder high surf, ride the DOUBLE AGENT in the middle to higher end of your volume range. Suitable for surfers of all abilities.’

What people are saying about it:

The Double Agent is a board aimed at a range of surfers from low level beginner to high level performers. The features of the Double Agent, to start with it has the famous Dan Mann spine running the length of the board…The Double Agent is an incredibly fast board, not only through the flat sections, but also through and out of turns due to the bite and hold of the knifey tail. This is a perfect board for anyone wanting to catch plenty of waves and have fun doing so.” – BoardShop

After paddling into the wave, you naturally get up where the flotation supports you. As speed gains then, you will feel supported being on the tail where all boards work best.” – Greg Griffin on Surfer Mag

This board has a lot of volume under the chest so you don’t need to oversize it… Paddles great and gets into waves easy… This board is a keeper for sure!” – user Erling on firewiresurfboards.com

The Double Agent is an update on previous Mann models… And while it may resemble similar round- or thumb-tail boards, this small wave, low-volume, high-surface area machine is anything but ordinary. Trimmed of volume, particularly through the last 1/3 of the board, the board’s wide-point is set back just a touch, keeping the board from feeling slow, or off balance, and distributing the volume more evenly, and accounting for the tail’s radical thinness.” – Surfers Village

Check out the foil on the Double Agent, and you’ll notice it’s more thinned out at the tail than probably any other board you’ve seen. That thin-ness can be useful if you want to feel as if you’re surfing “down in the water”, biting and digging into it. When a board is thinner in the tail, it becomes easier to sink. Compare that to a thicker tail, which would make you surf more “on top of the water”, with less bite and more slide.” – Ho Stevie
