Wilkinson Makes Narrow Escape From Round 2 Elimination At Teahupo’o

August 21, 2016, Teahupo’o, Tahiti, French Polynesia: World Surf League (WSL) Billabong Pro round 2 has wrapped up with several casualties in the 12 heats. Round 2 is met with challenging three-to-five foot conditions.

Current Jeep Leaderboard number 1, Matt Wilkinson survived elimination Round 2 against the event wildcard Hira Teriinatoofa. Teriinatoofa had an early lead with his 6.43 and a 7.07. Wilkinson did not stop and fired back with his excellent barrel ride earning an 8.00 to take the lead. Teriinatoofa needed a 7.11 and had an opportunity in the dying seconds of the heat but couldn’t finish with a good score to snatch the lead. Wilkinson advances to Round 3 where he is again matched up with Bruno Santos who previously defeated him in Round 1.

2016 WSL Rookie Alex Ribeiro put on a clinic and dispatched the reigning WSL Champion Adriano de Souza. This heat had low scoring rides but Ribeiro continued catching waves. Ribeiro was able to take the lead with three minutes left. De Souza attempted to regain control but fell on his takeoff.

Keanu Asing eliminated local favorite Michel Bourez in heat 3 of round 2. His big carves and snaps earned him a 9.67 combined heat score. Bourez attempted to answer back with his 5.70 solid tube ride. But he was unable to back up the score to catch the 3.97 he needed to advance.

Joel Parkinson finished through his heat and won against WSL rookie Jack Freestone with a 14.00 combined heat score. Parkinson, a former WSL Champion and event runner-up, has posted a 6.67 and 7.33 to dominate the heat.

Heat 4 was a heated battle between Julian Wilson and 2016 WSL Rookie Ryan Callinan. Callinan earned one of the highest single wave scores of the day, an excellent 8.17. Wilson tried to fire back with clean turns and earned a strong 7.17 and 6.67. On his last attempt, Callinan requrired a 5.67, but just fell short with a 5.33. Wilson won with a narrow 0.34 margin to advance to round 3.

Dusty Payne scored the highest heat score of the day, a 14.27, which included the critical 7.10 that knocked out his opponent Conner Coffin in the dying seconds of Heat 11. Payne will advance to Round 3.
