What Went Down In The Final Of The Vans US Open of Surfing – Women’s CT

Sage Erickson finally won her first ever Championship Tour (CT) event. Sage has been on the lower tier of Championship Tour rankings for several years and had 9th place as the highest ranking she ever finished a season with.

But in the recently concluded Vans US Open of Surfing – Women’s CT in Huntington Beach, Sage emerged the winner after a week of long and tiring battles against the CT giants. As a California native, her strong knowledge of the break was key to her success when she had to compete on Sunday when the swell was dropping and the situation demanded good wave selection.

The final heat kicked off with Tatiana Weston-Webb taking the lead for the first half of the heat until Sage answered back with a 5.17 ride. Tatiana took the lead back right after, leaving Sage needing a 4.36 to gain back the lead. With under two minutes left in the heat, both surfers had a final exchange but Sage made the most of her wave, throwing a lot of spray turn after turn and finishing strong on the inside, earning a 6.67 for her tremendous effort versus Tatiana’s 4.77. Sage’s last wave helped her win the final and she was crowned the Vans US Open of Surfing champion.

This win also helped Sage break through the rankings and she has climbed up three spots to the 6th place with less than 10000 points difference from Tyler Wright who currently sits atop the CT rankings. With four more events left in the Women’s CT, there is still a chance for Sage to take the yellow jersey if she wins another CT event and if the top three surfers don’t finish well.
