Reigning World Champ Wins 2017 Oi Rio Women’s Pro

Tyler Wright Wins Oi Rio Women’s Pro

Tyler Wright wins Oi Rio Women’s Pro for the second straight year. The reigning world champion is now tied with 6-time world champ Stephanie Gilmore in equal first place in the Jeep Leaderboard rankings. The win did not come easy for Wright as she had to grind her way up after losing in Round One and Round Three.

During the Semifinals, Wright relentlessly applied pressure to Fitzgibbons and the latter never found a way to recover. She took down current world number three and head on straight to the Finals.

The Final heat was against world number four Johanne Defay. Tyler applied a similar strategy by putting pressure against her opponent in the opening minutes of the heat, and she got Defay in a combination situation and delivered a solid 9.67 from a series of powerful bottom turns and carves topped off with a strong snap to complete the ride. This helped secure the lead that Defay failed to find an answer to.

Wright will head over to the Outerknown Fiji Women’s Pro sharing the number one spot with Gilmore. It isn’t the first time this year that two women shared the Yellow Jersey. In Bells Beach, Gilmore shared it with Fitzgibbons.
