The Philippines is preparing to host the 22nd Annual Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup QS1500 this coming September. It will be its second year as a Qualifying Series 1500 event for the World Surf League. WSL will team up once again with the Asian Surfing Championship to co-sanction the event.
Some of the world’s best surfers are expected to head to the Philippines island of Siargao seeking opportunities to earn qualifying points.
The local government of General Luna, headed by Mayor Rusillion strongly supports the event and has been supporting surfing at Cloud 9 for a long time. The mayor is regarded as the Godfather of surfing in Siargao. Mayor Rusillion is working together with Governor Sol Matugas and the local government to welcome the WSL and ASC for the biggest international surfing event in the Philippines.
John Mark Tokong, Last year’s event winner and local legend has been surfing in a series of events throughout Asia in 2016. He is keen to grab back to back titles for this year’s event.
He has trained in Indonesia and Cloud 9 in the past few months and is expecting good waves in the upcoming event.
Chris Zaffis, who previously earned 3rd place in Siargao, is ready to get back to the Philippines, where his first ever QS event took place.
Zaffis has earlier nabbed a win at the Mentawai Pro, and is coming to this event with a strong dose of confidence. He has high hopes that Cloud 9 will deliver the hollow barrels he is accustomed to.
