Owen Wright is preparing to compete in the upcoming Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro at Merewether Beach, an event that runs as a part of Surfest between February 20th and 26th 2017.
Owen is back in good shape and has been offered a wildcard slot in the World Surf League (WSL) 2017 Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour. After falling in a warm up session before the 2015 Pipe Masters kicked off, Wright suffered a head injury, which took him off the tour for the entire 2016 season.
When asked about Owen’s return to the Championship Tour, Glen Hall, Tyler Wright’s coach, told the Newcastle Herald, “He’s slowly making his progress towards a comeback, but the timeframe is still unknown for everyone, even himself.”
“He’s just taking it easy and easing his way into it. He’s surfing and training and he’s really happy, which is a good thing. He’s past the real serious side of the brain injury and he’s in a position where he can slowly get his back into the groove.”
Fans who’ve been waiting for Owen’s comeback are eager to see him back in competitive form. Meanwhile here’s a throwback clip featuring Owen Wright’s Innersection, his submission for Taylor Steele’s film competition some six years ago.
Will Owen be back in this level of surfing in time for the Championship Tour?
