The coveted Rip Curl Cup has been taken by Mega Semadhi, an Indonesian pro surfer, in an event that has been dominated by international surfers. He was the only local surfer to be able to reach the finals and eventually grab the title. This will be his second Rip Curl Cup after his 2013 win at the same event.
On his way to winning the title, Semadhi beat Mason Ho, Damien Hobgood and Clay Marzo. He was off to a slow start but soon found his rhythm, and there was no stopping him then. The Indonesian pro has scored a perfect 10 in the semis. Then in the finals, he bagged a 9 point wave and added another perfect 10 to finish the deal.
There were four perfect 10 barrels that day which included an impossibly long barrel ride by Irons in the second round. Brazilian Paulo Moura has also scored a perfect 10 and Clay Marzo had five 9+ point barrels.
