Jordy Smith Crowned Hurley Pro Winner

Jordy Smith nabbed the Hurley Pro title for 2016 at Trestles. Jordy had a great start at the finals and looked unbeatable. He put pressure early on and scored some good waves by the 15 minute mark while his opponent Joel Parkinson has yet to start getting scores. Parkinson was able to find a decent wave and was able to secure a 6.93 with about five minutes to go.

Joel needed an 8.77 to win. He was able to ride an 8.43 wave, just a little short of his goal. In the dying minutes, Jordy held on a wave and lost priority to Joel Parkinson. Joel gave it his all but fell right after his first turn. Jordy was able to catch the next wave and was able to finish it with a 7.63 to further extend his lead.

The big man from ZAF was able to nab his second CT event at Trestles and with this win, he was able to slip his way into the top 4 spot right above Kelly Slater.

The day started with the Semifinals that kicked off with the Filipe Toledo and Jordy Smith. Filipe seemed the surfer to beat and had advantage based on his body type. Toledo was able to find a ramp in the first few minutes and pumped a full rotation to the flats. He was able to score an 8.33 with that wave. He then paddled back out and was able to grab a quick lefty and secured a six point ride.

Jordy Smith answered back with three solid carves which earned him an 8.0 He kept at his rail game and stayed patient. Jordy held priority and found a set where he applied backfoot pressure. He secured three big cuts and a speed float and earned his second excellent 9.23 score. Toledo was unable to answer back and Jordy Smith earned his ticket to the finals.

The local wildcard Tanner Gudang faced off with Joel Parkinson in the next semifinal heat. Tanner had been able to score a 7.5 early in the heat. Parkinson was able to answer back with his 8.0 ride. Tanner was almost able to close out a .10 gap between him and Joel, but the latter was able to hold priority in the dying minutes of the heat to earn the slot to the finals.

Jordy Smith 15.80 def. Joel Parkinson 15.36

Heat 1: Jordy Smith 17.23 def. Filipe Toledo 14.50
Heat 2: Joel Parkinson 14.43 def. Tanner Gudauskas 14.33
